How Do Photocell Sensors Work?

Photocell sensors, also known as light sensors or photoelectric cells, are devices designed to detect and respond to changes in ambient light. They function using a light-sensitive component, typically a cadmium sulfide (CdS) cell or a photodiode, which alters its electrical resistance based on the amount of light striking its surface.

Working Principle

Photocell sensors operate on the principle of photoconductivity, where the electrical conductivity of the sensor changes in response to light intensity. When exposed to light, the resistance in the sensor decreases, allowing current to pass through more easily. Contrarily, in the absence of light (i.e., during nighttime or in dark conditions), the resistance increases, reducing or halting the current flow.

The photocell sensor for outdoor lighting is connected to an electrical circuit that controls the lighting system's switching mechanism. When the ambient light level falls below a preset threshold (typically between 10 and 20 lux), the sensor triggers the circuit to turn on the lights. Conversely, when the light level exceeds the threshold (e.g., during dawn or when artificial light is no longer needed), the sensor signals the circuit to turn the lights off.
